Indiesent Exposure: Donwill Tiombe Lockhart And Cubic Zirconia Drop Science and EPs

By DJ Fusion

What’s good Young, Middle Aged & Old World heads?

Glad to be back in touch with the Planet Ill reader fam during this third week of Black History Month of 2010!

It’s that time to hit the masses with definitely glad to get things with another installment of Indiesent Exposure, the weekly music column where folks drop some FREE quality music downloads & information about quality artists from the Independent Music Community who deserve more exposure and props for keeping their various genres lively & non-cookie cutter status .

Hopefully post by post around here, Planet Ill’s Indiesent Exposure will give your ears some temporary respite from some of the daily audio wackness, boredom and/or iCoonery that bombards the masses through the mainstream radio and TV airwaves’ definitions of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, World Music, etc.

If you like what you hear & download up in this section (some joints of which will hopefully be new to folks), PLEASE support these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows, etc.

At the end of the day, music artists need to eat like everyone else for putting in their work somewhere down the line.

In this week’s Indiesent Exposure session to let y’all wash away the nonsense circus that is the U.S. Mainstream Media (is Tiger Woods REALLY reading a prepared press statement apologizing about putting his peen the wrong direction serious news? SMH), we’re rocking with 2 free full releases (1 EP and 1 mixtape) of Hip-Hop, Rock, Electronica and Funk grooves to blast in the headphones/speakers and whatnot.

Please check out everything below from these talented artists and the Planet Ill family know what you think when you get the chance – hope everyone enjoys the selections!

Let’s get into it:

As a part of the critically acclaimed independent Hip-Hop crew of Tanya Morgan (don’t sleep on the Moonlighting and Brooklynati LPs) and through various guest appearences & solo tracks, Cincinnati’s Donwill has been making his mark as an on point MC in the past few years for heads to keep one’s eye on and enjoy.

To get heads hype for his upcoming solo album dropping later this year, Don Cusack in High Fidelity, Donwill dropped Tanya Morgan Presents Donwill: Laura’s Tape which touches base on the themes of new, old and lost love while tying in the themes from the 2000 film”High Fidelity” (kind of a slept on movie, but pretty dope).

Donwill shows off a lot of his solid style of making compelling narratives in each of the songs as well as having the ear (which some MCs seem to be lacking in the indie music world sometimes) of choosing the right production to make the audio flow right for the heads who like to get their collective head nod on.

Tanya Morgan Presents Donwill: Laura’s Tape for those not familiar with Donwill is a nice introduction to what he’s about with all of the skills & personality that for those who may get jaded with any form of recent Hip-Hop Music could bring them back into the fold.

Music Video: Donwill – Laura’s Song

Way back in the earlier history of my radio show in the early 2000s, we received some pretty fly solo music work from independent singer & songwriter Tiombe Lockhart, who later on ended up doing some work with the Living Legends crew & Platinum Pied Pipers amongst others.

Her musical style with vocals on those works ranged from traditional Soul & R&B music vibes to jazz singer type of delivery along with that sort of airy, atmospheric sounds that could fit in amongst a Portishead-type of track.

Along with the guitarist Todd Weinstock, keyboardist & percussionist Daud Sturdivant and the keyboardist Nick Hook, she’s putting out some more dope music as a member of the outfit, Cubic Zirconia.

The Cubic Zirconia sound from the Cubic Zirconia – Ready To Slide EP release in my opinion can be best described as an organized audio clusterf*** of Deep House, Funk, Rock and Electronica music that can fit in from scenarios like dancing at the NYC hipster jam at someone’s loft, to trashing around in the dive bar’s local mosh pit, to getting into the mellow out zone out mentality to after just getting extra at your house party after your 5th shot of grown folk liquor.

While this description can sound kind of insane, I do really dig the diversity this outfit as not just for the sake of them doing such actions, but for being able to nimbly put together all of these styles in a way where it’s not off putting and makes heads curious to see more of where they’re coming from in the future.

Find out more about more about what’s happening with Cubic Zirconia crew’s music, remixes, tour schedule, pics and more over at their official website when you can at http://www.CubicZirconiaMusic.com.
