Indiesent Exposure: Gods’Illa, Kid Koala, Ancient Astronauts & More

flasherBy DJ Fusion

What’s Good to the folks over here at Planet Ill – hope my folks in the States had a good and safe Labor Day Weekend (still kind of recovering from mine – shouts to my peoples in the NJ/NYC Metro area)!

Anway, now it’s time to get into a bit more of Indiesent Exposure to the masses – the weekly writeup and download piece here on Planet Ill that strives to give some exposure to quality artists doing their thing on the independent music circuit.

Pretty much every music genre is covered in this section – Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, etc.- to keep things a bit lively & diverse.

Hopefully, we’ll give your ears a temporary break from some of the audio wackness and/or iCoonery that bombards folks each day via the radio and TV airwaves.

If you like what you hear (some of which will hopefully be new to folks), support the artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to shows, etc.

End of the day, they need to eat like everyone else for putting in their work somewhere down the line.

Anyway, here goes – hope y’all enjoy:

Gods’Illa feat. Uno – Should Know Better (Download)

The independent Hip-Hop crew of Gods’Illa represents both the DC Metro (Forestville, MD) & Brooklyn, NY areas. Consisting of members Ace, 7-1-20 and Powerful, they have a cool up-to-date spin on Boom Bap era Hip-Hop that doesn’t sound dated or stale along with some songs that have some Go-Go Music influences.

Their latest project, The PreRelease EP, is now on the internet for folks to download (check it out here) to get an idea of their direction & promo for their upcoming full length album dropping later this year. The track “Should Know Better” featuring Uno is one of the joints I rock with heavy.

Check out more information about them at http://www.myspace.com/godisilla.

Kid Koala – Its All Over (Download)

Kid Koala is one of my favorite turntablists, graphic novelists (you don’t know?) and producers (sometimes DJ and producer do NOT make a good combo, we all can’t be DJ Premier and whatnot).

The Montreal, Canada representative’s releases have always been solid (check out Some of My Best Friends Are DJs as a cool album to introduce his grooves to people) and I was amazed to see a whole album on his website at Nufonia.com available for free.

The track “Its All Over” is on Kid Koala’s The Slew album, which folks can cop here.

Noiseaux – Cessation (Download)

The rock group NOISEAUX – consisting of 5 people representing 4 continents – is one of those groups you get grateful to run into on the internet Social Network vibe (via Twitter, actually).

Led by front woman Noah Sow (author, radio and TV host) of Germany, Noiseaux is a dope example of non-watered down rock music made for commercials selling cell phones or your mom’s latest sedan (but still has good grooves folks can get with).

I chose my personal favorite track from their self-titled release, “Cessation”, for folks to check out (as well as the video for folks to view below – VERY dope). You can find more information on them at http://www.noiseaux.com.

David E. Beats – Her Features (Download)

David E. Beats is a young producer and MC originally from Washington, DC now residing in New York.

His production style takes melds Hip-Hop, Pop, R&B, Rock and Electro influences and he has been getting it on over the past year with his work with the independent Hip-Hop music scene as well as his own mixtape release of the “In The Lab” series (cop the first one here as a free download).

I hate to have to put folks into the “Oh, he’s kind of on a Kanye West” box but in a good way he is (sans ego and 808s “Huh?” for a second straying).

You can find out more info about David E. Beats over at http://www.myspace.com/tonenswaggahent.

Ancient Astronauts – I Came Running (Download)

The Ancient Astronauts (consisting of members Kabanjak and Dogu representing Cologne, Germany) are really good DJs and producers whose style blends Old School Hip-Hop, Funk and Dub Reggae vibes.

They have done work for everyone from Fort Knox Five to Hip-Hop mainstays Ladybug Mecca of Digable Planets and Zion I. Their debut album, We Are to Answer, is currently out on the ESL Music label and the track I’ve chosen for folks to check out from that release is “I Came Running.”

You can check out more about them at http://www.myspace.com/ancientastronautsswitch.
