Indiesent Exposure: Tommy T, The Very Best, R.E.U.B. Get Busy
What’s up Planet Ill Reader peoples and supporters!
Time to wash away w/some good audio this past week what’s become a sad case of “hits, foolishness, jail, repeat”, tired Kanye West jokes (thanks Country Music Awards, now get over it, Taylor Swift did) and recycled songs w/ trash talking for disses (*yawns* wake me when ANY of these cats put out anything remotely near a classic album again after getting tired of playing with their Flip Video cams from Target) in the music world….
It’s that time in the week for another session Indiesent Exposure – the weekly writeup and music download piece here on Planet Ill where we strive to give some well-deserved exposure to quality artists doing their thing throughout the independent music circuit.
Pretty much every music genre gets covered in this section at one time or another – Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, etc. – to keep the audio goodies a bit on the diverse & lively side.
Hopefully post by post, we’ll give your ears some temporary respite from some of the audio wackness, boredom and/or iCoonery that bombards the masses each day via the mainstream radio and TV airwaves.
If you like what you hear in this section (some of which will hopefully be new to folks), PLEASE support these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows, etc., especially since at the end of the day, they need to eat like everyone else for putting in their work somewhere down the line.
Since we gave love to strictly to the ladies last week on Indiesent Expsoure, this week we’re doing the same with the fellas with some singles action on the Hip-Hop, Dub Reggae and AfroBeat music ends.
Check out everything below from these talented artists and let us over here Planet Ill know what you think when you get the chance – hope everyone enjoys the selections!
Here we go:

Tommy T – Brothers (Download)
Bassist Tommy T (real name: Thomas T. Gobena) is best known as being a part of the internationally known Gypsy Punk powerhouse collective Gogol Bordello and the Reggae Crew of The Abyssinian Roots Collective.
The Prester John Sessions is his first solo album (which he also self-produced), and is a cool blend of the vaious modern day musical and cultural influences of his homeland of Ethiopia, with a sound that blends traditional Ethiopian Folk Music with 1970s era Funk, Dub Reggae and Jazz.
The track “Brothers” from this album definitely leans more heavy on the funk and jazzy spectrum – almost kind of jazz fusion like (on the Miles Davis end, not the “Ugh, I hear this music at the dentist office waiting room” end).
Check out more information about Tommy T, his music projects, touring schedule and other things over at his official website, http://www.TommyTMusic.com.

The Very Best feat. Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend – Warm Heart of Africa [Architecture In Helsinki RMX] (Download)
The group The Very Best consists of Malawian singer Esau Mwamwaya and European Production Duo Radioclit (heck of a name, right?).
They get a lot of credit not just for the eclectic blend of AfroBeat & Dance music in the studio folks have been making the past few years, especially with the absurdly excellent Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit Are The Very Best mixtape that dropped a while back (cop the free download here) but for the lively performance aspect from their worldwide touring as well.
The Very Best’s first official album, Warm Heart Of Africa, just recently dropped and with the title track being one of my favorite joints from the release with it’s laid back mellow AfroBeat vibe and instrumentation along with the uplifting vocals of Mwamwaya & the background singers.

R.E.U.B. feat. South East Slim, K-Beta, Killa Cal, Lealo Hood, Von, Wordsmith, Greenspan & Akshon – Hustler DMVmix (Download)
The DC Metro has had a strong & worthy independent music scene for a good long while, usually with the quality R&B artists (Raheem DeVaughn, Sy Smith, Mya, etc.) getting more into the mainstream than the Hip-Hop artists as of late – until the Wale album dropped of course.
Ghana Born and DC & NYC Metro raised, R.E.U.B. (Real Entrepreneur in the Underground Business of hip-hop) is a talented MC/Producer who has been putting out consistently solid singles, albums and mixtapes since 2004 sticking out with his solid, raw flow as well as a nice diverse selection of music topics and production in his music.
The track I chose for folks to see what’s good with R.E.U.B. is from his upcoming The (Black) Rapper Show album with DJ/Producer Clinton Sparks and is a VERY dope DMV (DC, Maryland and Virgina area for those not in the know) posse cut featuring some of the best independent MCs from the area, including Southeast Slim, K-Beta, Killa Cal, Laelo Hood, Von, Wordsmith and Greenspan along with Reggae artist Akshon.
