Indiesent Exposure — 23 October 2009

Jully-Black-4By DJ Fusion

What’s the good word this week to all of our our Planet Ill Folks!

It’s that time of the week again for a some Indiesent Exposure – Planet Ill’s weekly writeup and music download piece which strives to give some well deserved exposure to quality artists doing their thing independent music circuit.

Pretty much every music genre is covered in this section – Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, etc. – to keep the audio a bit on the diverse & lively side.

Hopefully, we’ll give your ears a temporary break from some of the audio wackness and/or iCoonery that bombards folks each day via the mainstream radio and TV airwaves.

If you like what you hear in this section (some of which will hopefully be new to folks), PLEASE support these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to shows, etc. since at the end of the day, they need to eat like everyone else for putting in their work somewhere down the line.

For this week’s section, we have some cool singles from the Jazz, Hip-Hop and Soul Music ends…

Check out everything below from these talented artists and let us over here Planet Ill know what you think when you get the chance – hope you enjoy everything!

Jully Black – Running (Download)

Toronto native Jully Black is really well known over in her native Canada, where the R&B and Soul music songwriter/performer has been firmly established since her debut album dropped a few years ago in 2005, This Is Me along with as a lot of collabs with Canadian MCs through the years.

Folk here in the U.S. probably know her voice from the collaboration she did with Hip-Hop MC Nas on his God’s Son album, “Heaven”.

She has a really solid album of jazz & R&B styles with the Revival album that came out this summer around that way via Universal Music Canada under her own imprint of Jully Black Entertainment (which instead of Universal Music U.S. dropping joints from what feels like the “Tone Deaf ‘R Us Women’s Singer” store, they should give her some love here, but I digress).

The track I’ve chosen for Indiesent Exposure, “Running”, is brand new from an upcoming project (for now, only available on iTunes) and has a kind of Motown + Rock music vibe and a pretty good message along with it.

Aych – A Dolla & A Dream (Download)

The music from Tampa, FL Hip-Hop representative Aych (by the way of Wilmington, Delaware) has high energy, song writing capability, and flows with his music.

Some folks may know of him from the round of mixtapes that were dropped earlier this year up and down the East Coast or through his appearance on BET’s “106 & Park’s Freestyle Friday” segment.

One of the tracks from his upcoming Untitled album dropping in 2010, “A Dollar and a Dream”, is a pretty nice cut that I think shows the people were he’s at as an artist.

Fat Freddy’s Drop – This Room (Best 7 Version) (Download)

The New Zealand music collective Fat Daddy’s Drop have been doing their thing heavy internationally since the release of their first album, Based on a True Story, in 2005.

The 7 man band’s musical influences are really strong on the old school soul and reggae (especially more on the Dub & Rocksteady spectrum) ends.

With their second album dropping later this year with Dr. Boondigga & The Big BW and their 1st touring date in the United States happening in Los Angeles, it’s about time folks over on this end of the world to see what’s good with this crew.

I thought the track “This Room” was a nice introduction to their sound and their performance style (especially this is from a live performance 7″ recording), kind of a nice laid back track w/ some good breaks and grooves in the mix.

Dynasty – Femcee (Download)

There’s not a lot of information out there currently about Queens, NY born/Tampa, FL based MC Dynasty, but she’s putting it out there as having some very solid skills on the mic and one for these labels to be on the lookout for.

From doing opening performances for folks such as Mos Def, Beanie Seigel, Fabolous, Wu Tang Clan & KRS-One in the Florida area to dropping some solid releases all over the ‘net as of late, Dynasty is getting it in.

Her dope “Femcee” track has been making its rounds in the college, internet and community radio community for a minute and with it’s latest cosign by DJ Premier on his “Hip Hop Nation” radio show on Sirus/XM, it only seems things for her are on the up and up.

I personally feel her vocal style is a bit on the MC Lyte side (not a bad thing) in regards to having a pretty smooth yet not soft flow over some pretty boom bap music territory – what do y’all think?

You can find out more information and hear some more of Dynasty’s music over on her official MySpace Page at http://www.myspace.com/DynastyMusic.

Whitefolkz – A Beautiful Thing (Download)

It’s not fair at all, but some folks still tend to look at Hip-Hop MCs who aren’t of Color as either on the good end as Eminem clones or on the bad end as either on some corny Vanilla Ice revisited status or imposters for attention like Grandmaster B.

Wsahington, DC area Hip-Hop producer, MC, musician (professional guitar & piano player) and businessman (co-owner of Topp Dogg Art Studios) Whitefolkz thankfully fits none of those stereotypes.

Through the music I’ve gotten from his team so far, he has an engaging, intensely personal & really interesting diverse set of music and talent for heads to get involved with and enjoy.

With top musical influences like Andre 3000, Prince, Marilyn Manson, Jimi Hendrix, UGK and Curtis Mayfield you don’t get your same ol’ cut and dried Hip-Hop joints from Whitefolkz who’s been killing the DMV & international circuit with on point live shows, mixtapes and official releases throughout the 2000s.

This latest track from Whitefolkz for I picked up for Indiesent Exposure, “A Beautiful Thing” has come to be one of my favorites from him and the Topp Dogg Hill camp – dope soulful production with the narrative about the enjoyment of the music life.

Folks can find out more about Whitefolkz’s and the Topp Dogg Hill crew’s upcoming shows, music releases and more at the offical label website, http://www.ToppDoggHill.com.
