Planet Ill Breakdown: G.O.O.D. Friday Rolls On With Christian Dior Denim Flow

By Odeisel

After a false alarm, Ye gets back on his G.O.O.D. ass job and drops the delayed Friday track “Christian Dior Denim Flow” featuring Kid Cudi, fellow Friday rhymer Lloyd Banks, John Legend, Ryan Leslie and Pusha Ton. The song, while lyrically inferior to its predecessor, is far more inventive musically and employs many more devices in its construction.

The track begins with heavy strings and a gospel like harmony which rolls into a drum similar to “Paid In Full” with a bit of Bali flavor added. Kidnapper voices ordering all the models to the floor, and a Kanye bathed in radio distortion takes to the mic in get busy mode, flipping fashion-filled phrases (say that three times fast). Kanye finally has a theme song where all that fashion stuff actually fits in a non-opulence-driven context and he goes hard.Pusha T is fitting G.O.O.D. Music like a glove, his natural arrogance complementing the far-reaching production. He speaks of his experience on the VMA’s and his salmon colored suit and being styled by Italian Vogue, while getting paid six grand for his abbreviated appearance. Life on the other side wears on him well, it seems.

Staggered distortion-aided drums propel the song until the beat drops and the chorus goes a capella until guitars and a harder, slow drum brings the track closer to the gutter than the run way. Ryan Leslie goes in rhyming about what beneath the surface feels like a jab at Cassie. You be the judge:

It’s time for a lesson in model behavior, damn look at all the bad bitches I gave ya

Man, I can see the floss to your flavor, look like Wonder Woman and Still need a savior

Maybe it’s a billionaire, maybe it’s that cocaine, I done seen drugs and money run the whole game

A good girl, lost in the city life Asian provocateur, hold them titties right

The pace quickens and Lloyd Banks as a result is perfectly at home, smoking away his problems and freeing his mind from the old ways that handcuffed him previously. With all the collaborations he’s been getting into recently and the success he’s enjoyed, perhaps that approach is what’s up for his career. This placement surely won’t hurt any. Cudi closes the track out and styles his whole verse with the best presence and flow on the song.  Half the stuff he says you can barely make out but because of the A plus delivery it sounds really good.

Another G.O.O.D. Friday, another track featuring a host of people and another sojourn into musical creativity with Mr. West. Keep ‘em coming. Enjoy.
