If you’re an 80’s baby, you remember David Hasselhoff before the orange swimwear. You know him by the black leather jacket behind the wheels of the illest whip in the world: the bulletproof black Pontiac Trans Am with the red light in the front running left to right. While Curre$y is probably not banging in Germany, he is dancing with the stars and both Dame and Ski have him on go, readying Pilot Talk 2, even though the first edition dropped earlier this year. His first salvo, “Michael Knight” ain’t bullet proof but it speaks volumes just like KITT the car.
The simple boom-bap drum is complemented by a funky bass and different guitars that add rich depth and further the sound that was begun under the DD172 movement. Ski Beatz has furthered his evolution as a musician, mastering the subtleties of blending live instruments and samples where the drums and high hats are present and not drowned out but subdued and supportive.
Curren$y is in rare form and it’s a shame that his charisma doesn’t match his skill. He’s got lines for days and he delivers them with a butter soft, laid-back precision, with a tinge of accent to make it feel down home. Stanzas like, “We in the yard, tell your dogs they should be scared of us/we break it off, like an engagement gone bad I fill your Jacuzzi with groupies make it a bird bath,” put his connectivity on full display while his manipulation of “miss me” in triple entendre shows the range of his skills.
I can do without his Bobby Digital impression on the breaks, but this song is really really dope. If the whole of Pilot Talk 2 flies as high as “Michael Knight” then they should clear it for takeoff A.S.A.P. Word to KITT. Enjoy.
