“Holly” has been floating around for a minute, but Sleigh Bells decided to clean it up and release it to the masses proper like as the B–side for “Tell ‘Em.” If you like the Brooklyn kids then this is right up your alley since it sounds like it would fit perfectly on Treats. However, while that may make you happy, it could also be the Achilles heel of this duo.
The obnoxious, distortion-laden guitar. The stadium chant-like vocals. The loud fuzziness of it all. It’s grand for a song or two. Hell maybe even 11 as Planet Ill gave Treats one hell of a good review. However, this crew’s sound doesn’t seem to allow for a lot of diversity and movement. How do you use this as a foundation for evolution, or do you. Can you imagine 2 or 3 more albums of this?
The song begins with Alexis Krauss exclaiming “Wasted all day, killing all the Capulets!” So you already know Juliet’s fam doesn’t stand a chance and neither do your speakers. There’s a clap, a tambourine and a pulverizing, growling riff underneath. Then Krausse holds up, the guitar goes through a few stabs and you are dropped into a vat of earth shaking noise. The bass pounds, the synth screams and that guitar minces your sub-wolfers to nubs. It’s what we have come to expect from the duo. It’s just as wonderfully thunderous as everything else we’ve heard from them.
Don’t get me wrong. I like this song. It speaks to the inner raging bitch in me. But I’m not sure if this is something that the duo can build a lasting career on or if this is a flash in the pan sound that will soon be over taken by the next CW embraced genre of the moment. I really wish for the former. “Holly.” Holla.
