Planet Ill Breakdown: Rewards-I Used To

By shelz.

Chairlift has been around for the better part of 5 years with only one major release, but you know that didn’t stop Aaron Pfenning from moving on to a side project aka Rewards to drum up some side support.

There is obviously enough Rewards material to keep Pfenning occupied since he’s been touring both the US and Europe recently, but an album still hasn’t appeared. It shouldn’t be long though as he has started pumping out finished recorded stuff. Case in point: “I Used To.”

The single starts with cloudy synthetic ambiance that collides with layered drums and distorted guitar. It’s a bit glum and very 80’s new wave. The lyrics are pretty hard to decipher through Pfenning’s echoed delivery, but it’s easy to deduce from the general tone of the song that the lyrics are probably a somber affair. He sounds like he has him guy pout on, but the new brigade of melancholy man songs will give this piece a place.

“I Used To” is not bad. If you are a fan of the umm.. wave of new wave that hit the US from across the pond back in the early 80’s you will love it. Maybe that’s what the song title means. I used to listen to A Flock of Seagulls, now I sound like them. Don’t laugh, that totally could be it.

Oh, word to Stereogum for the track.
