Consequence has been around for a grip. From rocking the tail end of the ATCQ wave to playing the background and penning with Yeezy’s Good Music camp, the Queens-bred emcee has been in the thick of the music for a minute. He’s been low for a while but he’s back, this time with Buffalo emcee and Griselda guerilla Conway the Machine riding shotgun on his latest entree, Complex Con.
Snazzy, 70’s horns and lively snares pace the track with an upbeat if not uptempo groove that is definitely a departure from the grimy goon music Conway usually spits over. Not mellow or soft, but it provides a nice backdrop for fluidity.
“This for every kid who put his projects on/and did what he did to get his progress on, raps Consequence as he take s a trip down memory lane to recount the hardships and obstacles in the way of his early success. The chicks who fronted, the couches surfed, the setbacks overcame are all building blocks that made the Consequence we have now. Conway’s tale of course involves a bit more drama as his hurdles were literally life and death. Bullets to the head and neck run a very comfortable first to any issues of non believers, women and industry non sense. But alas, we still arrive at the same point: survival of the fit.
Complex Con is dope. Musically it rests in the vein of Midnight Marauder-era Tribe while lyrically, the themes of surviving the times and eating the odds will resonate through any era. Enjoy
