Centric Feat. Lil Fame, Rock & Joshua Gunn – Gutta Rap

Gutta Rap is an impressively tough collaboration featuring Lil Fame, the Rockness Monsta, and Joshua Gunn produced by Oakland, CA producer Centric. The track is backed by scratches on the hook, an organ loop for added heft and a standard but strong boom-bap kick and snare.

It’s tough hearing Rock without expecting partner in rhyme Sean Price holding him down. Less tragic is the sound of Fame without Billy. We have heard him collaborate with many artists over the last few years, including Boston emcee Termanology, so hearing him spit outside the Mash Out context is far less jarring.

North Carolina’s own Joshua Gunn spits some cool lines but vocally he is drowned out by two distinct voices who have over 20 years of familiarity built in. Gunn doesn’t do enough to make himself standout and overcome that vocal deficiency. Definitely win being on the track, but we’ve gotta see more to say whether he legit has the goods.

Gutta Rap is a tasty morsel for the trapped in the 90s cats and pretty solid standard boom bap. It’s interesting hearing such a sound coming from a Bay Area producer, but nonetheless authentic. It’s certainly good for a few bumps before you get on to the next.
