Smoke DZA: Ghost Of Dipset (Prod. By King Thelonius)

By Odeisel

I never really gave much thought to Smoke DZA as an artist because we already have a Curren$y and he’s just a Harlem version but not as talented. Not a bad rapper but redundant.  I took a look at his latest song because of the title, Ghost of Dipset. Not that I expected him to recapture that sound, but I figured what the hell.

The track was produced by King Thelonius during last week’s SXSW festival and features that soul sample sound that more closely resembles Kanye and Just Blaze than the frenetic sped up soul of the Heat Makers. It is a slow-rolling, emotion filled sample. The drums pound but are a tad slow, not really noticeable with Smoke DZA’s slow flow.

DZA is deliberate and precise with his flow, he doesn’t allow himself to get overpowered by the sample, and he delivers for his part. It doesn’t sound anything like Dipset, nowhere near as juvenile but also nowhere near as fun, but appropriate for the beat. Solid but unspectacular yet dope for a smoking session (obviously) and good enough to bump. Ghost of Dipset. Enjoy.
