Will Jumanji Take Azealia All The Way To The Bank?

By Odeisel

There is usually a time in a brands history when it’s faced with a competitor and the way that it handles that comparison frames the destiny of that brand. Azealia Banks and Iggy Azalea came out roughly at the same time and both have faced a bit of triumph and a few speed bumps in their brief careers. Can’t speak on how the hell those similar names came out together or how dope it is that one is black and one is white and how many other points of comparison between the two artists appear diametrically opposed, but it makes for a bit of fun.

Banks would seem to be the underdog, lacking that major cosign the way T.I. seem sto have his cape on for Iggy. Banks ripped Coachella down a couple weeks ago, stemming a big of negative press she had been getting. To be honest, I could have given a salty red booger for either of them until I heard this little number from Azealia called “Jumanji.” Holy crap did this chick go in on this.

She borrows a bit of gusto from Dipset, which is understandable if you’re talking Uptown. Hudson Hawke and Nick Hook produced the track which has a bit of that Heatmakers DNA along with the synth that is so popular these days, and some pounding drums. Admittedly, you could probably rap the ABC’s over this and at least 3/10 people would probably like it. At different points they interject some island steel drums and incorporate the movement of snare drums if not the actual usage of them. What makes it special is how shorty just attacks this beat like her daughter is tied up in a Brooklyn basement.

She does have a lil Kim in her cadence but it’s more vocal than flow; they don’t mechanically sound alike in song structure. She is at both times feminine and hardcore. She hears the rumors, she reads the blogs. She knows her name is out there and quite frankly any press if good press for a budding artist because people are talking about you. This girl is seemingly unfazed by the attention, whether it’s arrogance or youthful ignorance I can’t tell, but this song is ready for primetime. If he keeps it up, Nicki Minaj may have to actually be forced to be better than someone rather than winning by default. Only time will tell. Until then, “Jumanji.” Hold that.
