Hip Hop’s Ten Biggest Delusions, Part 2

By shelz.

I asked my kid what a culture is since that’s what he’s learning in social studies.  He responded a culture is a group of people who share a particular set of behaviors, mores and beliefs. So I asked “Well, what if your culture is built on nonsense beliefs and mores?”  He said, “Then your culture is Hip-Hop.”  Out of the mouths of babes right?  Well, the lil man and I put this together, a list of standards this group should take a hard look at and then immediately flush.  There is nothing wrong with some cultural updating. Right?

Drugs are grrrrrreat!

Rappers technically don’t have jobs.  So there is no random drug test for them.  Hopefully, you do have a job.  And your company, more than likely, has a drug policy.  Drugs really suck if they are the reason you are unemployed.  I mean with no income you can’t afford to buy dope.  An ugly catch 22.  I know.

Madvillain – America’s Most Blunted

Ugly girls be quiet!

So ugly broads can’t rap, huh?  Imagine if ugly dudes couldn’t rap.  There would be like 8 rappers. Country would be the number one genre in the world and Steve Stoute would have never been able to tan America. The allowance of the aesthetically challenged is a tried and true practice in Hip-Hop that should be extended to women.  It’s gender discrimination pure and simple.

Willie Dee – Bald Headed Hos

Rap is a stepping stone to more appreciated art forms.

There is nothing wrong with being a rapper.  However, there is something wrong with preferring to be a mediocre something else because you feel like rap falls short on the artistic totem pole.  I understand ambition but you can’t expect others to respect Hip Hop if its own practitioners don’t hold it in high esteem. Knowing a chord and a half does not make you a rocker.  Sorry.

Lil Wayne – The Price Is Wrong

Industry rule #4080: record company people are shady.

Wait.  That’s true.  Never mind.

Tribe Called Quest – Check the Rhime

If you voice dislike for an artist or their work, you are a hater.

I don’t understand what good people think will come to them if they refuse to admit some artists aren’t all that great. Do they think the rapper will pick them out of the zealot line up and give them something.  Pay them for their years of faithful service?  You dont have to like everything every rapper does to be a good fan.  It’s from the dissenting opinion that not just revolution, but evolution grows.

Akinyele – Put It In Your Mouth
