Maybach Music Group: Self Made Listening in Hell’s Kitchen

By Odeisel

A boss is someone that gets things done and presides over production. Say what you want about William Roberts, but Rick Ross is a boss. The last year and a half has been filled with hit records, two successful mainstream albums and a slew of signings to his Warner Music-backed Maybach Music Group label. Rick Ross has firmly established himself as a boss. Last night in NYC, black SUV’s pulled up to Hell’s Kitchen lounge, near fabled Times Square, with smoke escaping through dark tinted windows and the full complement of MMG in stride for the Self Made listening session.

While other rapper/label owners have horded talent only to banish them to the Phantom Zone to live the shelved life, Rick Ross has Pillz, Meek Mill, Wale and Stalley out in those streets putting out records and dropping heat. On this night they hit everybody with some funk from the May 24th release album and it bangs hard.

The Hennessey-sponsored event featured hot hostesses and bartenders and the whole crew rapping bar for bar with their songs alongside associate French Montana. The venue was packed and the album was played in its entirety, along with bonus cuts like the Lil Wayne-guested “9 Piece” and the hella flattered by imitation Meek/Ross collabo “Tupac Back.”

There are a few surprises including a Lex Luger track that doesn’t live off escalating nose and snare drums, as well as hard charging rhymes throughout. Fans can expect guest appearances from Curren$y on the album as well as others and while 19 tracks is long, the different combinations of rappers mute that length to a certain extent. Here’s some video from the evening. The Maybach rolls on. Look for Self Made in stores on May 24th.
