The musical collective Muthawit has been rocking for over 10 years throughout the U.S. bringing a tight mix of eclectic music sounds to listeners worldwide.

Lead by singer/songwriter/filmmaker/producer + URB ALT Festival founder Boston Fielder, the crew (which flucuates between 3 and a maximum of 24 members at times with the Muthawit Orchestra) has recently dropped their latest full length release online,

men & women (la Revenge de Uncle Baldy).

The album puts on display a lot of diverse audio influences that mesh together well throughout it’s 10 tracks, including Free Jazz, Blues, Funk, Soul and a mixture of Atmospheric, Psychedelic, Punk Rock.  It’s music that grooves hard, whether the songs are acoustic or electronic based, slow or high tempo, yet it almost feels dreamy. It kind of reminds me of Jimi Hendrix at his most hallucinatory haze mode.

The inspiration and creative process for the album is as almost as bugged out and awesome as their audio imprint…here it is straight from Boston Fielder’s mouth:

men & women (la Revenge de Uncle Baldy) is a charged headphone homage to Tupelo, MS jazz/blues legend George Smith a.k.a. (Boston’s) Uncle Baldy who is a largely forgotten but primary influence on Elvis Presley’s early musical career. The infinite dance of past vs future and acoustic vs electronic is at the core of the album.

“’men & women’ was produced in exotic locales such as under my loft bed in Harlem; inside a broiling attic in Stone Mountain, GA.; in a pissy Brooklyn urinal; and on a front porch in the cottonfields of the Mississippi Delta. We kept it raw and live when possible. Our only sound proofing was piles of dirty socks. So, the album definitely smells great…if you like cornchips.”

men & women (la Revenge de Uncle Baldy) is not someone’s “look at how artsy I am” project, but a genuine expression that organically connects the some of the different worlds of Black Music.

Give this great album a listen (and if you like it, support by buying the project) and in the meantime get one of the singles as a free download below.
