Weird Al Yankovic is the last recording artist you would consider getting involved in some beef.  But for a few hours yesterday, he was tossing shots at Lady Gaga’s camp.  Want to know why?  Read on.

The Godfather of the musical parody, decided he wanted to do a parody of “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga.  He contacted Gaga’s people and was given a hefty list of direction for his song. It was a bit daunting, but he proceeded according to plan.  The Gaga plan, that is.

Weird Al claims that Gaga’s camp wanted a finished version of the song before they would decide if they approved.  Mind you, Weird Al does not have to do that.  He says it’s an ethical decision he has made to ask the artist, not a legal one.  But he was excited about his version so he did as Gaga’s folks asked.  After the submission, Weird Al says he was told, “No.”

Maybe this is a new millennium case of taking yourself too seriously.  Weird Al was recording music when Gaga was in diapers.  Maybe she isn’t aware that Weird Al doesn’t do no.  He’s done parodies of folks from R.E.M. to Talking Heads to James Brown.  Michael Jackson gave the thumbs up twice for “Beat It” which turned into “Eat It” and “I’m Bad” which turned into “I’m Fat.” He’s even parodied Madonna.  Maybe that is who he should have asked in the first place considering Gaga must have had to get permission to remake “Express Yourself.”

After Weird Al took to his blog to vent, Gaga’s camp said he was wrong and they never intended to block his ability to release the parody, but now there’s a new problem.  Al already released it for free on the net.  He still intends to put it on his impending album.

C’mon people in the Gaga camp.  No one gives Weird Al a hard time.  Loosen up and let that man make another selection.  I’d like to see him re-do “Bad Romance.” He could call it “Bad Skinny Pants.”  It’s a start.  Anyway, here is Weird Al’s take on “Express Yourself,” oops; I mean “Born This Way” called “Perform This Way.”  Enjoy.
