Mobb Deep, Nas And The Alchemist Put Their Collective Foot In Dog S**t

By Odeisel

With Prodigy home a couple weeks, it was only a matter of time before the boys got back in the booth for some of that familiar murder music. The first strong result is the Mobb Deep and Nas collaboration “Dog Shit,” produced by The Alchemist. The resulting song is true grit that recalls some of the best days of that NY hard shit.

The beat is simple yet sinister with a horror movie-sparse piano that switches pitch; delicately raising and lowering the same key progression.  There is a momentum-stirring drum roll and rattle end-bar and splashes of string synth in the back ground, providing the steady head nodding track necessary for the tough talk to grab you.

Prodigy still doesn’t have that snap he possessed in his prime; that fluidity and the quick, killer wit that made him one of the best rappers in the game. His slow, steady, grizzled flow is meticulous and plodding, like an aging hit man. No elaborate tricks of plans, just the direct silencer to the head as you emerge from your car. Not pretty but damn effective.

Havoc’s voice is a bit stuffy like he has a cold but his energy is higher than P’s. He keeps the flow going and pushed the Mobb madness further setting the table for Nas. Havoc’s verse is a place-setter in this track; the middle leg of the race.

Nas brings the song home with the anchor and high light verse. He talks of the heads that are fresh home from jail but were not rehabilitated. Their mentality is still suspended in time and frozen in place and they come out the way they went in; ready to get it popping on the streets. But Nas warns them they can end up like Albert Anastasia, bodied in the barbershop, but the way the line is delivered it could serve as a warning to his comrade P (whose name is also Albert) to keep it cool while he’s out on these streets. It wouldn’t be the first time Nas sent a message to someone he was rapping with on the same track, but this one definitely is absent of malice. His flow is high powered and he easily captures best verse honors for the track.

Alchemist on the track, Nas on the anchor and the Mobb back together. You really can’t ask for a better welcome home for Prodigy. It’s the early 2000’s all over again but with an updated feel. One thing it isn’t, it “Dog Shit.”
