And The Beat Goes On: of Montreal Flies, Xaphoon Salutes The Good Life and Intuitions Ruins Ish

By shelz.

It’s that time folks.  Another round of audio abductions and melody misappropriations is upon us.  There’s some good stuff and some more good stuff to take a listen to this week, so count your blessing and pass the headsets.  However, before we get started… is it me… or did the personal information of the rich and famous take a TMI turn this week?

Relationships are tricky things.  Think about all the drama that has unfolded in your life directly related to being forced to interact with other people.  Now imagine all of those things happening with an audience.  I don’t know how famous people do it.  I can only imagine how difficult it is to have every contact documented, dissected and discussed by people you don’t even know.  Sucks for them.

Case in point: Charli Baltimore

Yo, did this dude even mention why he was putting her on blast?  Did she curse his mother or steal his money or something?  Horrifying.  All I can say is, be nice to the people in your circle, because at one point he liked her.  He doesn’t anymore though.

Anyway, enough of sour Sam and his rant, let’s get to some music.  First up is of Montreal.

The eccentric crew from Athens GA decided to cover Buffalo Springfield’s massively tragic end of a love affair track, “Expecting to Fly.”  The song is somber enough as it is, but of Montreal managed to make it even worse with the haunting almost ghostly way they recorded it. This is melancholy business folks.  It’s also of Montreal’s offering to Record Store Day.

Blot your tears and blow your nose.  Phantogram’s “When I’m Small” is up.  This time though, there’s an extra bonus, Intuition.  His latest release, I Ruined These Songs For You Too, hosts this song, plus a gaggle more great jams that he decided to add verses too.   The song was kinda dope to begin with. Intuition doesn’t manage to ruin that.

Next is Hogdy Beats and Domo Genesis of Odd Future giving new life to GZA’s “4th Chamber” I don’t know who’s who.  I don’t know who Earl is.  I know this track, as old as it is, never sounds dated. And that these articles about white folks living black rage vicariously through these Golf Cart nuccas is ridonkulous. Enjoy.

Moving we have Xaphoon Jones with his remix of Kanye’s “Good Life.”  It’s one of many reinvented songs Xaphoon out his signature on for Xaphoon Jones Volume 2.  Nice.

Last up is Arcade Fire who spent some time in Haiti performing recently.  There were plenty of covers covered, but who can turn down Cindy Lauper?  Here’s the Grammy-winning band performing “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.” And just in case you didn’t know, this song wasn’t original to Cindy either.  Her version was a cover of the original by Robert Hazard. You can check it after the video.
