Jay Electronica: Prelude To A Freestyle

By Odeisel

It’s been a while since we heard anything tangible from Jay Electronica since all the fuss surrounding his signing to Jay-Z’s Roc nation. His biggest moment is close to two years old and the already enigmatic rapper is dangerously walking the line between mystery and obscurity.  Absence makes the heart grow fonder, but the longer you are away from the light the easier oblivion becomes. After the subtle gut punch to Diddy (“Shiny Suit Theory”) Electronica has kept a low profile. Until now.

A few minutes ago he dropped a Vimeo video “Prelude to a Freestyle” which shows him on exotic locals like Egypt and on stage in front of thousands. Shot in black and white, the video gives you a taste of what he’s been up to and an idea of what’s coming next. The rhymes are still dope, even if they still don’t follow a particular narrative and he still commands a profound presence. The “freestyle” floats atop Kanye’s  “Devil In A New Dress,” sans any notion of Yeezy and Rauce, leaving Elect to his own devices.

In all, it’s a nice morsel, but with his moment in the sun getting further in the rear view, it’s time for Jay Electronica to do something significant. Hopefully this “Prelude to a Freestyle” is a prelude to heightened activity and production from the mercurial MC. Enjoy.
