Indiesent Exposure: Darwin Deeze Gets Hip With The Wonky Beats Mixtape

By DJ Fusion

What’s good Planet Ill crew!

It’s time again for your weekly Indiesent Exposure installment of FREE quality music downloads and info about independent music artists of different genres who deserve serious credit for keeping things lively and original in the world of music.

Indiesent Exposure is set to give your ears temporary respite from some of the daily audio wackness that bombards the masses through the mainstream radio’s definitions of Hip-Hop, Rock, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, World Music and more.

If you like what you hear and download in this section, PLEASE support (monetarily and otherwise) these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows, etc.

This week’s Indiesent Exposure audio selection features some sweet Hip-Hop Hipster grooves (but not in a bad way) from a South Carolina to NYC transplant.

Whenever you have the chance, please let all of the talented Indiesent Exposure artists and the Planet Ill crew know what you think of the music in our comments section!

Here we go:

The combination of Hip-Hop and hipster usually doesn’t exactly bring positive imagery to mind. An average music fan might imagine collectives chilling with daddy’s trust fund attempting to look as poor as possible with brand name raggedy-looking gear while engaging in a rebellious “down with the people” music genre. In other words, more people fronting AND making sickly unskilled sounds not worthy of even being downloaded. :/

Thankfully, the music of Darwin Deez does not fall into that category.

Originally representing The Carolinas, NY transplant has been making noise for his Rock, Hip-Hop, Electro and Funk influenced solo artist works and outside productions for others.

Darwin Deez’s catchy yet quirky blend of Pop is just weird enough to consistently be interesting but still ready-made for people to groove to, dance and easily enjoy.

Here’s an explanation straight from Darwin Deez about the inspiration for his latest project, the Wonky Beats mixtape:

“It’s a high concept mix-tape, tailor-made for multi-generational impact, created exclusively from Willy Wonka samples with the songs all derived from/based on the original 1971 score. It’s like the Grey album but with Chocolate.

Inspired by Das Rascist’s “you oughta know” lazily singing along with the choruses. chunky as hell beats. The film is a great allegory. I never knew it was allegorical until a stoner pointed that out to me though. I just always loved the songs. Really special melodies (cheer up charlie) and chords (pure imagination). Thought they’d make good hip hop choruses.

Why limit yourself to Willy Wonka samples? Limitations inspire me. Limitations give me the freedom to feel ok about whatever comes out because I can always blame the limitations. But the secret is to get the faucet running in the first place. Otherwise I am just too serious and too scared to write anything.

But this particular limitation also has the power to make people curious, like the Grey album, which is all it takes in this day and age to make a popular record; and potential popularity is always thrilling, never daunting.

It’s the writing itself, the impossibly high quality standards I carry around in my brain that make me scared to write. Not the idea of other people listening in. I WANT people to listen in.

The rap style is like a brain dump (which is the technical definition of surrealism. “Why a mix-tape?” – albums are to mix-tapes as the news is to gossip. They will change the way you hear the songs in the movie forever!”

This 14 track mixtape of songs and interludes flows pretty well with the nice combination of mostly mid-to-high tempo tracks, respectable rhymes on the mic and solid guest appearances by Kool AD of Das Racist and more.

What could have been another dry “oh wow, ANOTHER mixtape that samples music from a popular movie” creative work is a pretty fun project and a nice intro into how Deez’s mind works with working to make one-note music forms more multi-faceted.

More early Prince Paul than Pop, Darwin Deez displays a talent with Wonky Beats that people should be eager to hear in the future of fun, well-crafted music of all kinds without pretension.

Sit back, relax and enjoy some sweet audio goodness.
