Foo Fighters Toss Their Fans Some Rope As A First Ray Of Wasted Light

By shelz.

When Dave Grohl created his one-man-band, Foo Fighters, upon the tragic end of Nirvana in 1994, I would have never thought that it would lead to a sophomore project, let alone a 7th album.   Well, I was wrong and it did.  Not only is Wasted Light one of the more anticipated albums of 2011, the lead single, “Rope,” is one hell of a great song.  I can’t be right all of the time.

Grohl and company shift a bit from their core sound.  There is a bit of disorder to this song, but not in a bad way.  There are layers and textures that create depth without making the song busy. At one point during the verses, the percussion sounds out of sync, as if it’s going to slide of the record, but it’s brought back into place on the chorus.  The distorted guitars, as well as Grohl’s shriek, find empty spots in the melody to pop up as if they are running in between rain drops.  Not often, but enough to keep you on your toes. The song then appears to grind to a quick close only to showcase a great breakdown with a staccato drum and milling guitar work.  The foundation here is really dope.

The lyrics seem to be about holding on, not allowing someone to get away from you.  The rope is to tie on when it feels like you are falling.  But is that in or out of love?  Hmmmm. Anyway, “Rope” may not be head-banging, hard-driving screech fest that “White Limo is, but even in their restraint, Foo Fighters still rock.

Wasted Light just became extra anticipated and I became even more of a hum bug for doubting that the ex-Nirvana drummer could make lightening strike twice.  He has. “Rope.” Enjoy.
