Danger Mouse And Jack White Go Two Against One

By Odeisel

Spaghetti Westerns are almost as famous for their music as their bullets. Whiney guitars flutes and various instruments fostered changes in mood and anticipation that keep viewers on the edge of their seat for stories that have generally predictable outcomes. That style of mood music was co-opted by recent movies like Kill Bill, here action was augmented by music. Grey Album general Danger Mouse and Italian composer Daniele Luppi have just finished a five year long project entitled Rome which combines the musicianship of artists that played on classic Westerns like The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly with the seemingly omnipresent Jack White and the talented Norah Jones.

This ambitious project will be released in March, and the lead song (the marvelous shit to get your mouth watered) is “Two Against One,” the sort of brass ballsy, gritty mood music you could expect to hear while Clint Eastwood or John Wayne was laying a man down. Layered guitars and big open drums form the bulk of the sound with high hats beneath adding some sizzle.

White lays the vocals down in a high and low pitch with both vocals synchronized. The dual layer adds a textured quality to the song and furthers the overall theme of the protagonist facing not only his enemy, but the man in the mirror. White vacillates between a signing and quick-talking delivery gathering and diffusing urgency as needed.

“Two Against One” is just a precursor of an ambitious project featuring brilliant musical minds and precision musicians. Rome may be dropping May 17th, but t certainly looks like it won’t be falling. Enjoy.
