And The Beat Goes On: Adele Goes Natural, Ortiz Goes Hard And Yeasayer Go Crazy

By shelz.

Finding a new album to buy from an artist you have never heard of is an easy task. There is music on top of music out here these days; so many bands, so many rappers.  It’s hard to keep track of it all.  However, there are some artists that we do keep careful track of for one reason or another and sometimes getting music from them is like pulling teeth.  Whatever that means.

Did you give Lil Kim your $9.99 and still sit empty handed? Well, she said signing all those CD’s is such a time consuming process that you will just have to wait a Lil longer.  Now that Saigon is dropping his 6-year-old project on us, does that mean we are finally going to get Lost Tapes 2 or Red?  Probably not.   The Beastie’s long awaited Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2 is coming in April, even though MCA aka Adam Yauch is still battling cancer and WAR is right around the corner.  We win some.  We lose some, but I think Dre is starting to lose us all.  Anyway, on with the beat biters and dope style takers.  It’s time to deal with some reckless robbery and sonic shoplifting. First up is Adele with her version of “Natural Woman.”

The Carole King-penned song was created especially for Aretha Franklin and Aretha repaid King by recording one of the most celebrated songs in history.  A lot of people have tried to recapture the magic and have failed miserably. Adele’s version, recorded for VH1’s Storytellers, with its simple guitar backing is good. Not great, but good.

Next is Shwazee, with his interpretation of “I Got Five On It.” This track will never get old to me and he shouts the Ravens, so I’m not going to say anything bad about his skills here.  One thing I will say is Kayne West is starting to influence the emcee trade and I don’t know if that’s a good thing.  GO RAVENS!

Moving right along, we have a really umm.. interesting cover of Seal’s “Crazy” from Yeasayer.  I’m not sure if I like this. Twists on roots or Americana are actually becoming hip and for good reason, but everything can’t be deconstructed that way. This song just sounds like it’s missing too many elements.

Yeasayer – “Crazy”

Joel Ortiz jumps into the fray on “Hustle Hard.”  This sounds like some new new from Ortiz.  Do we normally get the oscillating intonation and the growling aggression? Or maybe I just haven’t been paying attention.  Either way, Ortiz is dope as usual.  Enjoy.

Last up we have Cory Gunz freestyling over Young Chris and Lloyd Banks’ track “Flatline.”  Corey can be as talented as anyone.  He can be the next whoever. His bars could slice you twice from across the room.  I still can’t deal with his voice.  He always sounds like he has a really bad sinus infection to me.
