Yelawolf is gathering the kind of attention that leads to a solid foundation in this business. His rapid fire rhymes and trailer park realism has introduced a level of grit that has been missing from the game and makes for compelling music. His latest heater, “Shit I’ve Seen” features Houston’s own Trae Tha Truth and is a continuation of the strong music he’s been laying down.
The beat features mellow flutes that serve as precursor to the coke-rush urgency of 70’s soul , similar to a Blaxploitation movie car chase. Funky, urban bass and conga drum rhythm is paced by maracas and punctuated in spots by dramatic strings and brass elements. A somber Mexican horn floats in the background while double-time drums cement the foundation of the dynamic, moody track
Yelawolf’s delivery fluctuates between patterns and speeds. He’s manages to infuse passion into his high speed rhymes, sounding remorsefully indifferent at the whild shit that s going on around him. He’s seen so much of it that it’s no longer shocking or shameful, but a fact of life. ‘Wolf takes to task rappers with tales of woe that have no real connection to the drama they spit, but also notes that he won’t judge, because his own situation is full of potholes. Everyday can’t be great and he’s seen situations where a bad day can go haywire and become disastrous. Including a time where one of his boys pulled an AK and sprayed the club. He was horrified but the rest of his homies thought it was funny and in a rare moment of sober clarity he asks; “Damn that’s how ya’ll get down?”
Trae That Truth’s low delivery is thrown off by reverb but it continues the double time rhyme. If you’re looking for something pretty, Trae exhorts, “This ain’t it.” He lacks the vocal agility of Yelawolf but he’s not an also-ran on the track. Everyone is in the struggle and going through pain, but some choose to focus on getting that bread. Tha Truth gets this point across just fine.
The track is the real star of “Shit I’ve Seen,” but Yelawolf’s handling of the track is what makes it special. The lack of snare drum and cliché sound effects is great and the energy and emotion of the rappers fit the track to a tee. Dopeness.
