Nas lost. That two word phrase has been run through the internet for years after the Carmen debacle and long after Nas dusted off the Roc. Sure you’re a supreme lyricist, but where’ your paper at? Your wife naked in videos, son, what’ sup with that? Of course when you’re rich and your music is eternal, the prospect of “losing” is ridiculous, but who said the net made sense? Nas rolls on with more dope music and addresses his “losing” on newly un-tagged and completed “Courthouse.”
A crowded courtroom atmosphere colors the intro with the banging of gavels and an assertive bailiff screaming for order in the court and ceding the floor to Mr. Jones, while the emotional tumult of Isaac Haye’s version of “Walk On By” is chopped up and served on the track. The organs well-up drama while a Chuck D vocal sample form “Public Enemy #1” provides the meat of the chorus/break.
Nas is deliberate and strong, hopping from “fake bloods like movie make-up” Tootie’s braces and cutting the ehads off Freemasons before you even realize the first verse is over. “The good man say get money and stay on the path, the pimp shit in me say, ‘Yo keep looking for ass’” exhorts Nas before being brought back to earth by a gift from his daughter. Everyone has dreams and a hater trying to move them off that path to reaching them. He continues :
A woman hates a man and stay with him for many years, tell him she loves him then be jealous of him. Now lame is how the ghetto judge him, cause he still with her, she take his cash and give it to some other real n***a, like me
The end is brilliant; two-waying the meaning of the line, alluding to his “loss” while admitting how often he’s been on the other side of the story with other women.
No matter how you feel about his life, with the mic in his hand, Nasir Jones will stay winning. With the recent ruling that cut his child support/alimony in half, it seems that winning streak extends to the “Courthouse.” Enjoy.
