Along with the rise of the super thug and the drug czar rapper, we’ve also seen the rise of the regular guy rapper. These rappers play video games, don’t always have every woman they meet at their whim and like Peter Parker, occasionally have issues making the rent. You would think that this vulnerability would endear them to the masses, but that discounts the escapism aspect of entertainment: people are only drawn en masse to opulence. Whether or not they go big, some of these guys have solid music. Today’s regular guy track, “Hi, P.S.” comes from Napoleon Wright II of the Kooley High crew.
The track is snare heavy with a regular drum loop setting the pace for the track. There are hazy atmospherics and subtle keyboard and guitar work in the background. The R&B crooning on the song is substandard but it’s fitting with the down to earth nature of the song. There are a few R.Kelly inflections but not R.Kelly talent. Wright steps in to sing on the intro to his verse. It’s more Erick Sermon/Bizmarkie than any real singing but again it’s cool.
Homey got girl trouble and he’s trying to find a way to fix it before it blows up in his face He doesn’t know why they fight but he’s looking for resolution. Finally he gets the ‘nads to end it with a letter. While out and about he finds a new chick with “phenomenal abdominals” that can hold him down. He amends his letter with the P.S. (I got a new chick) just to rub it in.
We’ve all been embittered by relationships gone awry. Shit happens. It’s nice to hear other people going through it instead of hearing about super dudes with gold chains, million dollar cars and hundred thousand dollar watches that will ride around town with the bitch you love and have you screaming eff youuuuu. Regular dude rap. Enjoy.
