Born in ’87 huh? I’m not even going to get started on what I was doing in ’87, but it damn sure wasn’t being born. That’s the year Paid In Full came out and yes I remember that and yes I bought a copy and yes it was on a cassette tape.
Anyway, while I was waiting on Eric B to show up on the ballot, Gilbert Forte was taking his first baby breaths. Now, 24 years later, he is on his grown man B.I. with some aggressive bars for Hip-Hop jesters, haters, pretentious posers and fake nuccas fronting on his creativity and their lack thereof. He even tells these dudes to go fuck their co-signs, but then he manages prattle off his like a Game disciple, bless his heart.
Don Cannon starts us off with Run-DMC getting the audience right before dropping “Here We Go,” then he loops a retro, brassy wall of sound to play foundation to Gilbere’s soap box rant and luckily for us, takes it easy on the tags. It’s pretty simple, but a few trick plays makes it interesting.
All in all, I’m enjoying the song and Mr. Forte’s new found chutzpah. It produces a bit of a Kanye growl on the back end of some of his lines, but it’s all good. Leader of the new school? Maybe not, but Forte is definitely in the class room.
“Born in ’87?” He’s still wet behind the ears. Watch your back though; this dude is blazing from both barrels and he’s got the glow. Word to Bruce Leroy.
