50 Cent Wishes Us A Belated Happy New Year

By Odeisel

G-Unit may be long gone from Interscope but it seems that 50 Cent is still in the building. He’s still screaming Eminem and Dr. Dre on his latest track “Happy New year.”  It may be a few weeks too late, but Curtis Jackson seems to have turned over a new leaf from the boring music of 2010 and has come with a new element.

He’s got the bread and, at least for this song, he’s decided to embrace the good life and put down the angry music. He’s been laying low and doing movies, but now it’s time to get back to what made him the movement that made the millions: the mic. This isn’t shootem up 50, Ja Rule wanna be singing on the track 50 or pop music 50, but a well-balanced Curtis that is possessed of humor, muscle and an edge that was missing from his recent hardcore caricature rap.

There are cymbals that clash, end measure, with brass accents and a sped-up vocal sample running beanth. There is a horn sample on top with a hard drum and the quirky sounds similar to the pacing elements from “Forgot About Dre,” to round out the composition.

The rich guy talk is still there, but it’s not ostentatious. He has the lambo but it’s just the getaway car because he’s still letting off shots. You know wherever there’s rich Black guys there’s white women and  50 got the blonds and brunettes in the building as well as the coke. Maybe they ran out of Pepsi. There is gratuitous drug use talk from ex pills to Viagra to codeine and kush that doesn’t sit well but the beat knocks and 50 has good energy. He doesn’t forget to push those headphones (which shall not be named for free) and references that Twitter stock transaction, which could land him in further hot water.

We need to hear more of this to really consider this a comeback but this is dope. The 50 we knew and loved built his hits on the back of little known beatsmiths; sifting through tapes for the best sounds and fresh ideas. Now he’s creaming for Alex Da Kid and Swizz Beatz. Don’t know if I like that but if it gets 50 Cent back in Hip-Hop music on a real level, I’m all for it.  It’s getting a bit shiny-suited up in here. Happy New Year.
