IllSide Radio 12/28/2010: 2010 In Review

By Odeisel

The Planet, along with Chicago’s own Square-One of B-Side Radio, have joined forces to bring you the week in review in Hip-Hop and current events, along with the occasional special guest and some music to keep you moving through your day.

This week’s Illside Radio deals with a look back at 2010 and the things that stuck out to us as listeners and cultural participants. We talk about people being fooled into thinking Detox was actually going to drop in 2010 and generally took a look at the top stories of the year and went down the line.

We briefly touch on the recent tragic murder of Magnolia Shorty who was gunned down in her native New Orleans. We talk about a few of the other dangers facing artists these days, including Fabolous’ shooting earlier in the year. 50 Cent’s bungling burglary incident is also briefly touched upon.

We revisit the death of Keith “Guru” Elam and the weirdness that surrounded the entire event. Was it really Guru that wrote those death bed notes? Why all the hate and vitriol for DJ Premier in those last days? What happened to all the people who were threatening producer Solar. Premier and the Gangstarr Foundation have new music coming out with unreleased vocals and we discuss whether it would sound natural. We also review Guru’s standing among the greatest MC’s of all time. Does the substandard Solar collaborations diminish his legacy?

We take a look at the BP oil spill and its catastrophic results. Was it really Obama’s Katrina? Have people forgotten about it or moved on (outside the Gulf Coast region). Are the fishermen getting their claims paid properly? Is the 20 Billion dollar fund sufficient to pay for the damage? Has anywhere else in America been hit with so many calamities in such short time? Should the people move? In the scheme of global tragedy and war, does it even rate as a real catastrophe?

We look at Tiger Woods and the very public unraveling of his private life and professional downfall. Should he have just paid the girls off? Did his ex-wife earn that money? How are their children adapting? Is he on the comeback road since his divorce was finalized? The Saints actually won the Super Bowl and did something positive for the region. Was that too good a story to be true? Was the game fixed?

We take a second look at Lebron James decisions and the ramifications of the event. We talk about how the world took his decision and ponder whether it was the right choice. The San Francisco Giants won the World Series for the first time since their defection from Brooklyn. We also look at the rise of NFL concussions and whether they are happening at a higher rate or whether we are just getting better at characterizing and diagnosing concussions. We give Brett Favre a final salute after being knocked out by the Bears.

We look at the UConn women’s basketball team winning their 89th consecutive game and what that means to overall sports.

We look at the deaths of Britney Murphy and her husband, Gary Coleman and others. We look at the Conan O’Brien/Jay Leno debacle and its aftermath. We address the Sandra Bullock situation and divorce and how sympathy can power a star’s rise. We look at Toy Story 3 and how surprisingly moving it was.

We look at Time Magazine’sechoice of the Person of the Year. Should it have been Julian Assange? Betty White’s return to the spotlight is also discussed. We revisit the tragic aftermath of the Haitian earthquake, the subsequent aftershocks and the calamities that followed. The rampant drug related violence in Mexico is also given some face time.

All this and much more in the IllSide Radio Year in Review. Sit back, relax, and take a ride on the Ill Side.
