Planet Ill Breakdown: Senor Kaos, Homeboy Sandman and Buff1- Machine New Bounce

By shelz.

I walked past the AC3 studio RV a million times the weekend of the festival and didn’t know what it was.  I figured unless they had tequila or gel shoe inserts, I didn’t need to question what was up with the land boat parked so conspicuously.  So I didn’t, but while I was wandering past it obliviously, there was some Hip-Hop on the stove in there.  They could have told a sista.

One of the groupings that put pen to pad and eventually rap to hard drive was Atlanta’s own Senor Kaos, Homeboy Sandman and Buff1 in “Machine New Bounce.”  Odd title? Yes.  It’s also a dope track.

The foundation is led by a pixilated singing computer voice repeating the word machine as a bassline that seems to double as the thump of a heart beat rides below.  There are some drums and the hint of an organ (maybe a xylophone?)  that is quickly replaced with digital strings that sound more digital than string. The vibe is very all bionic everything.

Both Kaos and Sandman take the theme literally, weaving short narratives about being Hip-Hop androids whose existences are strictly beats, rhymes and high noon lyrical showdowns. There is some cyborg pomposity as they channel the cosmos, a little my-circuit-is-doper-than-your-circuit talk. However, Buff1 takes the song to a different place.

His vision is a less literal romp through the beat.  He says his spit is rapid fire like machine guns.  He, Kaos and Sandman aren’t the machines, but the mechanics sent to wake up Hip-Hop.  Buff’s energy, combined with his figurative take on the subject, close the song out just as nicely as Kaos opened it and the trio getting their terminator growl on between verses is hella entertaining.

The three-piece represents different places, spaces and styles but still manages on short notice to present a wonderfully cohesive and imaginative song.  It speaks volumes to the talent of Hip-Hop’s indie scene.  I suppose the mainstream ruling class really does need to worry about the rise of the machine, machine, machine, machine, machine…MACHIIIINE! MACHIIIINE! Enjoy.
