Planet Ill Breakdown: DJ Absolut X Havoc X Sheek Louch X Joell Ortiz X Cassidy-If You Love Me

By Odeisel

The hardcore rap is quietly making a comeback. Those pounding head-snapping drums and raw rhymes that propelled the genre from the clubs to the jeeps are gaining momentum back to your speakers. DJ Absolut gathers together Havoc , Sheek Louch, Joell Ortiz and Cassidy for a romp through Illville on “If You Love Me.”

The main drums thump hard and keys dance around cymbal clashes , while digital flutes add freneticism. While the rhythm is basic, there are many moving parts but they blend in well. “Ain’t No Love In The Heart of The City” is interpolated by a female vocalist and lacks Anthony Hamilton’s soul, but that isn’t what this song caters to anyway.

Havoc has come a long way as a rapper in the absence of his partner-in-rhyme. While he isn’t a first order rapper you can count on him to deliver his 16 among heavyweights and not sound like a slouch. Havoc goes in on the fans and writers of this industry that “want love but don’t give it back/all you want is VIP and where the liquor at” which is so indicative of the industry inside these days. They’ll post your dancing in the bathroom drunk video and bury your album with no remorse but come to your label sponsored event and drink up all your booze.

Sheek talks his typical bust your ass talk with a little bit of love for the school kids that can’t afford his music but download it and bump it. “Black Benz, white inside looking like smores, when I sweat Patron come out of my pores,” raps Sheek, showcasing his powers of description and trademark sense of humor.

Joell delivers the best lyrical performance of the track and probably should have closed the track out with an abundance of fresh lines and skilled connectivity. Everyone knows what’s up with Ortiz he’s so sick the people that’s near him are throwing up. He’s constructing words like “boa constrictorish” and flaunting his grown man while others are “bar mitzvah-less.” He’s carnivorous and your wack ass is his grandmother’s chile con carne. He switches up flows and employs a number of delivery devices to spice up his verse. He’s the bar on this track.

Killa Cassidy is limited on this track by his punch line two line scheme. The format leaves him pray to a jokish set up where you can anticipate what’s next. Not that the rhymes were wack, just telegraphed

They they they say the heart of hardcore rap is still beating, and from what I hear, I believe it. Especially if we still love it. Enjoy.
