I’m not partial to yelling out Real Hip-Hop is back because to me, it never left. Lot more good stuff. Lot more garbage. That’s what happens when you open your doors. I will however say that that 90s Golden Age, NY-centric rap is striking back like the Empire, with the artists from that era no longer content to pander to kids, but to return to that era for inspiration and continue to rock for the fans that are still checking for that sound. This spirit is alive on the Gensu Dean-produced, large Professor-helmed “Forever.” The Texas-born Dean dusts off the legendary SP1200 for a compact production that could stand up to any track from the Golden Age.
There is a blues guitar sample that is sped up a bit and a murky rhythmic bassline that forms the base of the track. There is also a high speed wail that exists throughout on the periphery adding character and drama. The wails are cut short when Large Professor needs extra emphasis and the track needs a break from monotony as does the drum, which occasionally drops from the bottom. The Nas vocal scratches from “Last Real N***a Alive” add the Hip-Hop bow on top.
The Large Professor shows no sign of rust and his bars are clear and concise. His vocals are crisp and his breath control and tone are pristine, sounding even sharper than in his heyday as age has settled his voice to a lower pitch. He reminds you of Rakim’s wisdom and the “no biting” tenet that Hip-Hop has abandoned in recent times as rappers look for “inspiration” from past eras. Large Pro isues a call to arms as the apostles of the boom bap return to the cathedral and clean up the wackiness left by interlopers in the House that Run Built.
There are no histrionics, no singers on the hook, no misplaced guest appearances and no pandering to fringe listeners on “Forever.” Only razor’s edge lyrics over a hard core beats. This is your daddy’s Hip-Hop. Enjoy.
