It’s good to hear El Debarge again. That feathery falsetto still rings the bells of any 80’s baby and no one does ballads quite like him. This time around his voice has settled in a bit and he doesn’t depend on those high notes for emotion as much as before but he’s a much more balanced performer. Part of that balance comes with new alliances and his latest track, appropriately titled “Switch Up The Format” brings 50 Cent (yes 50) along for the ride.
50 Cent doesn’t disappoint on this one. His flow is faster than usual a la “If I Can’t” minus the husky aggression. His pitch perfectly aligns itself with the tone of the song. There aren’t many lines to speak of as his rhymes are focused on narrative rather than technical fireworks. Mr. Jackson is trying to get you next to him no matter where that is. Drop what you’re doing, get on the plane, the train or the automobile and get your ass there a.s.a.p. Spare no expense.
El has taken the simp and the youthful love idealism and put them away. He’s tired of waiting for you to come see him. Tell him where you are and he will get his ass over there for some loving. He’s tired of the missionary position so you can get on top. What he’s got for you is best delivered in person and his patience is at an end. That soft voice is still in effect but he doesn’t take it as high on this and the song doesn’t call for that kind of vocal manipulation.
The beat is standard with digital strings and a thumping drum, fluffed up by intermittent horns. It’s faster than mid slower than fast grove is danceable yet groovable and fits the theme like a glove with a muted urgency.
50 And El Debarge would seem like an odd couple but they fit together well on this track. Ye olde order changeth. The boys are trying to “Switch Up The Format.” Enjoy.
