Planet Ill Breakdown: Royce Da 59-24 Bars (Drunk)

By shelz.

The Slaughterhouse wave is coming back around the stadium.  Ortiz just dropped another mixtape.  Crooked I has his weekly freestyle series and Budden is in the midst of Mood Muzik Mondays.  Where is Royce though?  Somewhere drunk no doubt.

No shots…well yes shots, but not the kind of shot you are thinking about.  Royce is again evoking his copious drinking practices in his latest offering to the Hip-Hop masses, “24 Bars (Drunk).”

The track is simple, probably on purpose. It’s some thump and horn stabs with a little synth to round it out and sound effects to break the monotony.  We’re not here to listen to the beat though.  Royce is an emcee whose bars should always take precedence and this song is a good example of why.

The freestyle (is it really?) isn’t about being drunk, but according to the intro, Royce was drunk when he delivered it.  Considering how sharp he is, I would say either he has the liver of steel or he probably wasn’t all that inebriated.  You can’t get this dope with the room spinning.

As per Royce’s normal, the lyrics are driving and aggressive.  No hanging back on the beat or letting a few thumps get past him.  The concepts are textured and quick.  You may have to listen to this more than once to understand what he’s saying.  Not because he’s inarticulate but because the ideas mingle then intermingle and some of the references aren’t obvious.

So pull your earphones out and get to work.  “24 Bars”.  Hiccup.
