Planet Ill Breakdown: Prince-Rich Friends

By shelz.

Someone, somewhere said there is a revamped version of 20Ten coming soon; a broadened vision with a few songs added to re-introduce folks to an album they weren’t interested in buying the first time around. While that process is becoming pretty regular and does work for some artists, I’m pretty sure it won’t push 20Ten over the hump.

Then again, most of the talk of a revised album is wild internet speculation.  This could just be something the cleaning folks swept off the studio floor.

“Rich Friends” is allegedly one of the additional songs tossed onto the album to give it a boost.  It’s not bad at all.  A slow stomp of a drum mixes with an intermittent, sparse piano.  The acoustic guitar is almost random with some synthesized wood wind flashes sprinkled here and there.  The most robust part of the song would be the vocals.  Prince does the heavy lifting with plenty of layering and harmony from the back up department. The distortion on the electric guitar saws through the song, almost cutting it in half.  Dope.

Prince takes the idea of folks’ love for money and the things they do for a dollar and spreads it over the 5 minute track.  He suggests that money won’t make you happy no matter how much you want it to and that green does lead to some evil things. At least I think that’s what he’s talking about.

It’s an enjoyable slice of post sex-monster Prince funk, and one of the better songs from the 20Ten sessions, if that’s indeed where it’s from.  I guess we will find out soon enough whether this song is coming with a few more and a new release. Prince fans, keep your fingers crossed.
