The singles are coming fast and furious from Jersey’s favorite rock sons, My Chemical Romance.  Well, minus Bon Jovi of course and I guess Bruce Springsteen.  Never mind them though.  Neither has an album coming this year as anticipated as Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.  So as far as I’m concerned, they are the kings of the Garden State right now. Who else are you going to give the crown to?  Avery Johnson?  Forget about it.

“The Only Hope for Me is You” comes on the heels of the fabulously hype “Na Na Na” and features some signature MCR riffs and construction.  The song almost floats into existence.  Gerard Way’s muffled and distant voice peeks through the atmospheric intro only to burst through with some stabbing synth in tow. The writhing fringe ambiance is replaced with the guitar and the rest of the band is fully welcomed in on the chorus.

A cursory listen would have you thinking this is a love song.  The way the chorus rides that wave of controlled optimism and the chanting of the title is so sweet and heartfelt. But once you get into the lyrics, you realize there is more at work here than affection.  Bombs, guns and disaster frame the connection between Way and whomever he’s singing to.  He remembers being there covered in ash, glass and his friends?  Serious.

The song then works through a skeletal bridge just to rebuild into a pretty dramatic close with Way’s voice floats out of range just as it floated in.

“The Only Hope for Me is You” is radio friendly but still stays true to the group’s newly refined core sound. It’s not as awesome as “Na Na Na,” but how many songs are?  Jersey should be proud.
