Planet Ill Breakdown: Kanye West X Pusha T X Cyhi The Prynce X Keri Hilson-Take One For The Team

By Odeisel

The wingman is one of the unsung heroes of our great American society. His take one for the team attitude has enabled many a dude to conquer the ungettable hottie by drawing the herd away and allowing for a one on one match up. The herd may be comprised of either a less attractive (or less willing) sidekick or a whole bunch of malcontent chicks that are mad because no one is paying them attention. Outside the club, the wingman may be your main man, the rapper’s weed carrier, or the charge eater. This week’s G.O.O.D. Friday pits Pusha T and Cyhi The Prynce with the R&B singer who could, Keri Hilson for “Take One For The Team.”

Distorted beat boxes form the initial thrusts of the beat. There are some digital keys that are interspersed through the measures. Horror movie orchestral arrangements add a different rhythm and flavor during Kanye’s second verse.

Kanye’s first verse  contains is arrogance driven humor, completely disgusted with the chick he got stuck with and being places he doesn’t want to be and dealing with people he doesn’t want to be in the name of taking one for the G.O.O.D. Music team. Pusha T steps up and commits to the movement with whatever Ye needs. Need someone to eat the charge? Pusha got it. As long as he keeps his pockets fat, Ye can take the hottie and Pusha will take the nottie. His verse itself is solid but taking sloppy seconds runs counter to Pusha’s kingpin persona and sounds a bit out of place. I suppose if we’re all actors then your role changes with the job.

Keri’s misplacement in the middle of this song is like putting caramel on the top of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Even if it tastes good by itself, what is it doing there? It doesn’t enhance the song, nor does it distinguish itself. She pushes her voice in such a way that she sounds out of her range. That may just be delivery but it’s not what’s up.

Cyhi turned in another solid performance interpolating Jay-Z’s “One Minute Man” flow for a few bars. Cy gets to the meat of what being a wingman is all about, taking the not so hot and trying to get it poppin. Every man (or woman for that matter) can recognize something from his verse from their lives on the town.

“Take One For The Team” is another of these G.O.O.D. Fridays tracks that are perhaps too ambitious for what they are. While Late Registration was properly ambitious lyrically and musically, many of these songs are ambitious musically but limited lyrically and in song topic. Not bad though and points for a fun topic. Where the hell is Charlie Wilson?
