Planet Ill Breakdown: Jadakiss Feat 50 Cent-Dump

By Odeisel

New York rap has been ruled by the old guard for a while now. Everybody that was hot over the last decade is still in the forefront now, regardless of the changes that have gone on everywhere else in Hip-Hop. If you from NY and you ain’t 30, the hood is probably not checking for you. One thing has changed though is the state of affairs. We’ve been seeing collaborations in the last few months that we would have never seen 5 years ago, particularly from the G-Unit camp, which has changed their ideas regarding being so insular. The latest collaboration involves 50 Cent and Jadakiss, two rappers whose camps found themselves on opposite sides have come together to “Dump.”

There is nothing cute about the beat on this track with horns, a hardcore bassline that carries the bulk of the rhythm on the song. A simple boom bap drum and a blues guitar sample bring up the rear. Unlike many of the recent releases the mood here is generated more by the rappers and their malice than the music itself. There is a sung chorus but there is no romance to be found on this.

Jadakiss has done some technical work on his delivery. While is flow is still its same basic rhythm, Jadakiss plays with rhyme scheme in ways that he previously was unable or unwilling to do. The beat does allow for few breaks so the continuity is kept. The hustling, the weed, and the hyperbolic tales of gangsterism elicit smiles but nothing incredible or wild is here. Jada’s increased agility is a nice surprise. Unfortunately, the Jadakiss laugh…is still there.

50 Cent sounds reinvigorated. There is a bounce in his step and his bully style nastiness, which had been bogging him down is again tempered and balanced by that subtle sense of humor. His rhythm and timing accentuate that humor and propels this song’s mood higher. He growls, he styles, he threatens, all with a wink and a smirk-the style that made him famous before he caricatured himself.

Perhaps this is the new New York, where the old guard rallies together in Blues Brother fashion, putting the band together for a rousing, push back to the forefront. The possibilities make this push a lot more interesting  and “Dump” is hopefully just one of many coming collaborations. “Dump.” Then Duck.
