You may remember Gruff Rhys from his collaboration with De La Soul and the Gorillaz, “Superfast Jellyfish” on Plastic Beach. Or maybe you don’t. (Posdnuos stole that show.) Either way, you should know this cat stays on the move. His personal musical presentations have come from Super Furry Animals when he’s not working with Neon Neon or pumping out solo projects. Even though Rhys is spread pretty thin, he is still able to produce a quality product with his latest single “Shark Infested Waters.”
Rhys goes pretty literal with the Jaws theme, starting the song off with some beach frolicking and the happy summer vacationers spinning the FM dial in hopes of finding a decent soundtrack for their outing. What they find of course is Rhys and his ode to man eating fish.
Don’t ask me what the lyrics are about. I can’t understand enough words in a row to really tell you. However, I’m getting the impression someone he invited into the inner circle wasn’t who he thought they were. The swatch of Ricky Nelson’s “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore” at the end co-signs that guess a bit, but that’s the best I can do kiddos. Sorry.
“Shark Infested Waters” is a little retro Brit pop and a little psychedelic spacey electro groove, but all Indian summer haziness. It’s a perfect addition to your late summer playlist .. well that’s if you’re south of the Mason Dixon and still soaking up these 80 degree days. So, if you get one more road trip in make sure you pack this song and some shark repellent. You never know.
