Jadakiss, fresh from being listed on BET’s talked about Hottest Rappers of the 21st Century list is getting ready for an upcoming album as well as a proper Lox album on Def Jam. He’s putting product back on the streets after a drought, noted by his recent duet with 50 Cent and a couple other guest appearances. As such, it’s time to change the name on the package and give the fiends a taste of some different raw. He returns to his Mona Lisa guest spots with the track “Want Me.”
The track uses the drum pattern from Mary J’s “U Remind Me” remix as its base and ads, amid soft strings and Jada ad libs and that insipid laugh on the intro. A heavier viola runs as undercurrent and a harp accents the production. Aside from the string movement and an intermittent piano, there isn’t much movement on the beat, which gives a mixtape feel to the track.
The vocalist on the song isn’t outstanding, but she can carry a tune in that singing in the shower with those bathroom acoustics. Her vocal arrangements are boring but that’s more the producer’s fault than hers. Jada’s two verses sandwich her part and she does nothing to make you remember her once Jada gets back on for his second verse.
Jada gives a solid narrative but there’s nothing astounding. He’s not looking to wow you with killer punch lines but reel you into his story, a task in which he succeeds. There are no mayonnaise, guava, splurpleberry colored cars on this one nor any references to his homies who were in jail so they can have free surgery on herniated disks, so that’s already a win for Jada. On the other hand, this style isn’t as much a new thing as a return to his late 90s R&B hijacker flow. In any event it’s a cool song and a nice change of pace.
“Want Me” will not make you grab your dick if you love Hip-Hop, but if you got a hard on for Jadakiss (pause) then this will give you your audio fix until something better comes along.
