Freddie Gibbs’ “The Ghetto” was great as a one man track primarily because of his wonderful selection of Milkbone’s “Keep It Real” as his foundation. Gibbs’ skills weren’t dwarfed by the track either. His narrative about basketball rims with no chains, neighborhoods with no male role models and children with no true path was typical and heartbreaking at the same time.
Well, Gibbs is back with “The Ghetto Remix” and he has two Duck Down word slangers in tow. Gibbs gives the leadoff spot to Sean Price. Tek holds down the center of the song and Gibbs plays clean-up. Oh and Drama lets you know this joint is brought to you by the good folks of Gangsta Grillz … over and over again.
Price puts it down with a healthy dose of grime. He shouts out the Geto Boys, plays with Ben but has no love for rats and needs to be the first person questioned if Santa goes missing. Dude is straight rude and we love every minute of it.
Tek gives a mini nod to the Drake punchline (patent pending) while comparing the rap game to the crack game. Rappers are hood magicians trying to turn shit to sugar. Self medication and juggling baby mommas has him chasing green, but the paper chase seems to lead him right back to … you guessed it… “The Ghetto.”
The bottom of the batting order brings this song home properly. Gibbs has a hell of a voice and always brings an interesting story. There is plenty of nastiness when dealing with the resident freaks. She gets it in the car and never has the opportunity to roll around on his sheets. Violence is standard and IOU’s lead to 187’s. Sad, but true.
Listen immediately and more than once. It’s dope, even more so the second time around. Word to Shalamar.
