Planet Ill Breakdown: Crystal Castles Feat. Robert Smith-Not In Love

By shelz.

If this was a fashion intervention I could totally dig it.  I know aesthetics can be seen as the realm of the pretentious, but Robert Smith has been sporting the same look for a quarter of a century. It really is time for someone to step in.

However, this is not a remedial lesson in chic.  It’s “Not In Love,” a remixed Crystal Castles song with The Cure’s front man serving as vocalist, but it’s not a mash up.  Weird.

The track is one of the more laid back of Crystal Castles, only displaying the forceful sheets of noise they are known for on the hook. The verses and the bridge provide a skeletal eerie framework that at times whispers fun house.  At other times it feels retro, which is perfect for their guest.

Robert Smith’s voice sounds like it hasn’t aged a day.  He still forces that British accent into the same signature awkwardness that carried The Cure through the pre-emo goth days.

This song is pretty tepid with or without Smith. Or maybe I’m the only one who only likes Crystal Castles when they are jarring the buds out of your ears.  Plus, I just can’t get with Robert Smith over a luke warm dance track.  Cure fans will rejoice though, its nice to see Smith around.  Time to blow the dust of your Pornography cassette; that’s if you still have something to play it on.

And just in case this is your first taste of Robert Smith, check out “Killin’ an Arab” below.  Inspired by Albert Camus’ The Stranger, this was The Cure’s first single.
