Planet Ill Breakdown:Kid Cudi-Dangerous

By shelz

This song is years old; a possible cast off from a recording session that yielded better material. However, it fits Cudi’s current situation.  Don’t ever fight with the gut feeling that tells you “save this for later.”  Normally, it’s right.

The issue with Wale is far from fully formed and hopefully, what we have is all we are going to get. Yet Cudi has whipped out a dust-covered snooze of a song that has a pretty fitting sentiment.  Yes, folks G.O.O.D. Music’s tortured artist-in waiting has branded himself as “Dangerous.”

There is a slow draw on the synth that snakes around almost wah wah style, with some drums and hazy whistles. It conjures a dark, smoke-filled room with a locked door behind which plenty of tawdry things occur. Rich Hil pulls out his best 70’s pimp impersonation on the intro and hook claiming he’s cold enough to make the hairs on your neck stand up.  He doesn’t have to tell you he’s hazardous, you can feel it.

Cudi’s narrative is simple.  He blew off the shots for a long time, but it’s getting to him.  His silence was misinterpreted.  He’s not afraid of you, it just wasn’t that serious.  Until now. He bobbles a few bars and his words are not always clear, but the bottom line is, you don’t want none.

The synth drops out near the end, leaving just Cudi’s voice and a steady pulse. He gives some self big up to his freestyle skills and suggests that the folks taking shots aren’t going anywhere with their “treadmill flows.”  Cute.

It’s not Cudi’s best but his timing is pretty good.  Wale better watch out because Cudi is daaaaaaangerous.
