Planet Ill Breakdown:Big K.R.I.T.-If I Should Die

By Odeisel

None of us ever really plan to die. Some of us are aware of our mortality but even then we have no clue as to how soon we could meet our makers. Rappers are curious in that as many superman tales they weave they are preoccupied with the end of the story. I suppose there are just too many scandalous groupies and haters out there for them to successfully ride off into the sunset.

Big K.R.I.T. with a little help from the late great Marvin Gaye continues this Shakurian trend with “If I Should Die”. While not an original idea, it is marvelously executed.

The beat is colored by an immaculate sample of Marvin, who has been lending Hip-Hop a hand in a big way since Eric Sermon’s “Music” through Jigga’s “American Dreamin’”. His under-appreciated “If I Should Die Tonight” adds movement and melody with surprisingly little morbidity or melancholy, given the subject matter. It’s not an overly dramatic construction and fits well with K.R.I.T.’s delivery. The soft strings and the punchy drums round out the beat.

K.R.I.T.. does borrow from Pac’s cadence on the ad libs, you can hear the same sentiment, but that’s where it ends. The rhymes are lighter in mood and the song feels more like celebration of life than lament of its lost. He notes that if he goes before his time, he’d be fine because he’s lived a good life and loved a lot of people. He does revert to that blasted by haters stuff in the last verse, but he does bid his partners to forgive whomever it would be and let God deal with them, something that you almost never hear. He mentions the may relationships he’s enjoyed from friends and family and children, to his “favorite girl” as proof that his time here was not a waste.

Mississippi is underrepresented in Hip-Hop and Big K.R.I.T. Is serving notice that the door will be summarily kicked in. The range of emotion, the smooth delivery, and his solid rhymes make this song a success and a precursor of his coming success. “If I Should Die”. Enjoy…well not if I die, but.. you get it. Peace.
