Planet Ill Breakdown: Sha Stimuli-Unsung

17 years ago, Masta Ace crafted the Slaughtahouse album; a parody on the gangsta rap records that were taking over radio in the post-Chronic era of Hip-Hop. The album poked fun at the genre by crafting songs close to the genre in spirit but going overboard in a subtle way. So close, in fact, that it went over many people’s heads and was taken by many as a solid gangsta rap album.

17Years later, Sha Stimuli, younger brother of Ace Inc. member Lord Digger, drops a parody track “Unsung,” which slyly pieces together cliches to form a song that, if you aren’t aware, functions very similar to the subject of its parody.

“Unsung” contains all the elements of the trap music including the dramatic intro, the double snare and the elementary rhyme scheme. Sha Stimuli also employs a faux Southern twang that leaves little to the imagination as to the target of his parody. There are references to Rick Ross’ “MC Hammer” and “B.M.F” that are employed to cement the meaning of the song. Some people still won’t get that it’s a joke, but again, the song flies close enough to be enjoyed as a normal trap rap song. The slow flow and the ad libs would lead you to believe that he looks down on this genre. That hasn’t boded well for other up top artists in the past so it will be interesting to see the fallout from this.

In the end, it’s a clever song, and all the bases are covered as far as the set up of the joke, including mentioning that he’s “getting money” his “chain glistens and his watch shines” saving the dishes for the bitches and all other assorted rhymes associated with that sort of music. He notes that people may not find it funny, but he’s laughing. Hopefully it remains just that and no one takes it personally. Or maybe someone does and Sha Stimuli will get some much deserved light on his highly-skilled, under-touted career. Either way, he’s the “Unsung” hero. Enjoy.
