James Brown, the hardest working man in show business, always noted that you gotta pay the cost to be the boss. That sentiment has been boiled down to mantras like “Pay like you weigh” and similar sayings that describe the amount of sacrifice necessary to make dreams into reality. But Rick Ross is returning to the source, along with Slim Thug on “Paid The Cost”.

The James Brown sample runs throughout the composition, but it isn’t onerous. It’s actually a solid combination of that Southern Miami double snare gangster and the East Coast sample-driven production. There are those familiar sound effects that run throughout over a digital drum and a digital bass that adds some meat.

Rick Ross adopts a flow similar to Jay-Z’s “Brush Your Shoulders Off” delivery with half-bar long stanzas. Big wheels, big dough, and strip club monsoons occur along with the obligatory R.I.P. Pimp C anytime you use the word trill and you’re not Uncle Bun. Ross moved his momma out the hood but the haters have moved in. Not to worry. He still has the same Mac-11 for those break dancing lessons and he’s going to ride till the wheels fall off. Fairly standard.

Slim Thug wants nothing to do with anything unless it’s about money but as long as it’s the right amount, he’s in like Flynn. The beat drops at the intro of his verse, granting him center stage and he does his job for the most part. You’re not looking for anything mind blowing from Slim Thug, but he doesn’t drop the baton on the relay. He’s driving Bentleys and doing boss shit, whatever that is, and he doesn’t care about how you feel as long as your daughter’s jocking him. “She’s at the crib butt naked doing tip drills.” I’d hate him too if that was may daughter.

“Paid The Cost” is a solid song and another in the long line of work that Ross has been putting in this year. Whether you feel he’s fake, his work ethic is something that will continue to keep him above the law. Enjoy.
