In the old Marvel Universe, back when everything was new, you’d often find surprise superhero team-ups in random books with heroes that didn’t normally hang out with each other. Those team-ups brought excitement because you never knew what could happen. In Hip-Hop, the team-ups are more contrived. Pick the hottest producer and the hottest rapper and try to overtly make something that with be a hit. Producer Doc Ish has decided to bring some of that unpredictable flavor back by getting underground heroes Joe Budden, Talib Kweli and Sean Price together on the track “Is It A Dream.”
The track is lively with string samples of violins and a heavier viola introduced over a slick drum-snare and a smooth bass line. The combination is full, yet stays out of the way of the MCs which is necessary with all the firepower on this track.
Joe Buddens opens up with a smoother, less deep voiced delivery sneakers allegory, mentions of the matrix and other connectors keep his verses as usual rooted in pop culture but potent and his charming charisma muscle him through the balance of the track.
Talib Kweli’s verse is more dense, with line after line of connection that push his verse to Illville. What Kweli lacks in smoothness and delivery he more than makes up for in wit and flat out lyricism and ill rhyme schemes and content. “Following ideology like the yellow brick road” and “they don’t stretch before they battle, now they sore losers” are just a couple examples of the amount of busy-ness Kweli delivers on his verse. Sean P brings up the rear with a bully styled verse that pushes the song to a close. He pauses mid verse a couple time for his trademarked “P”. He opens strong and his aggressive flow mans up the track, giving shouts to E-40 and the Clik, and Wutang (Drugs rule everything around me, Dream) brilliantly mixing in the song itself and paying homage.
It woudn’t be a bad thing for more rap collaborations to go like this. A dope beat, and unexpected, unconventional grouping of MCs that can deliver. Here’s to this becoming more of the norm and not just a pipe dream. Word to Stan Lee.
