Planet Ill Breakdown: Wiz Khalifa-Radio

By shelz.

Don’t know how to proceed with a relationship that has entered crisis mode.  Should you stay?  Should you go? Is she worth the impending shouting match that’s sure to evolve if you dial her up?  Not sure? Then leave it to the local DJ.  Pick a song with some please baby baby pleases in it and tell the record spinner to play it on the “Radio.”

At least that’s what Wiz says you should do if you have made up your mind about this girl.  It doesn’t sound like Mr. Khalifa has done so yet.

This short tune from the crowned prince of weed and ink is pretty radio friendly itself. Some pop rock guitars lead you in to a hook that could have used a little digi-manipulation, well that’s if No ID and Jigga hadn’t killed it.

The guitars fall back during the verse, giving Khalifa full use of the pretty open foundation.  His delivery floats over the track well with no heavy complicated lyricism so the listener can learn and repeat.  It has enough personality to standout, yet its generic enough to nestle itself into top 40 airplay. Plus the theme of young love in turmoil is usually an instant win because plenty of folks can relate.

“Radio” is allegedly a reference track from last year.  I don’t know who it was supposed to be for, but it’s a shame no one picked it up.  It’s hardly groundbreaking, but still could have been a totally self fulfilling prophecy as I’m sure plenty of people would have called up the station for this.
