Seal is aware that his celebrity these days is tied tighter to his fabulous model wife than it is to anything he plans on singing. He seems content with that but also wishes people would still see him as a musician and not just Heidi’s husband.
His 7th studio album, due out next month, is entitled Commitment, which would seemingly refer to his family life. The theme of the album doesn’t bode very well for recognizing him outside of his vows, however, it’s still a touching nod to the folks he loves the most.
The latest single released from the album, which Seal says will be his best album to date (really? Who doesn’t say that?), is “Secret.” It’s a little bit country and a little bit pop, but very touching in its narrative about devotion.
The acoustic guitar drives the melody with help from some light piano and digital strings. The cello adds depth and a lingering organ plays understudy to the whole affair, peeking out just to add a bit of flair here and there; some adult contemporary for those who would rather curl up by the fire than hit the dance floor.
Lyrically, Seal tosses around some metaphors that all come back to the same central point. I love you. You love me and we belong together. If you are single by force instead of choice, don’t bother listening. The sweetness of it all may just force you into an ice cream and cheese cake eating binge. And you remember how bad that was the last time it happened, right?
The long time lovers in the house will appreciate this. It’s not the fire of novelty. It’s not the curiosity of infatuation or the afterglow of the first time. Its years of understanding, compromise and affection wrapped up into three simple minutes. So it appears that either Seal’s attempt at re-establishing his own identity outside of wifey may have backfired. Or perhaps he doesn’t mind being Mr. Klum one bit. Enjoy.
