Planet Ill Breakdown: Andre3000-I Do

A commodity’s value is in inverse proportion to its availability; the less available something is, the more it’s valued. Jay-Z alluded to that on “Encore” when he noted, “after a year, them 16’s is 1.2[million] that’s 2.4 and I’m only doing two.” Andre3000 seems to have taken that to heart. While others flood the market with 30 track mixtapes, Mr. Benjamin has delivered a verse here, and there, not even bothering to rap much on his solo album. His fans, as a result are left to salivate like fiends for his next verse, with no real basis for comparison between his apex and where he stands presently in terms of skill level. His latest song, “I Do,” gives his fans a new chance to jump on 3 Stacks’ sack.

The beat is a soul music sampled wail similar to the one that powered UGK/Outkast cut “International Players Anthem (I Choose You)” and in fact can probably be considered a continuation given the marriage soliloquy and title of the song. The brass horns are there supplying the gravity with a running hit hat. The underlying bass adds depth and that guttural rhythm that solidifies the track.

Andre employs a sing-songy delivery and moves his voice to the melody well modulating to accent with emotion. With that in mind, even with cute devices, it pales to his Outkast work and still leaves you wishing he would stop getting cute and just snap off on the mic one time, even if just to say he still got it. It’s a cute song, but its more of the same stuff he’s been doing since The Love Below and nothing to give proof that in fact he can still get busy with the best of emcees. If he’s “outgrown” being an Outkast, that’s cool, but with Big Boi dropping a very strong rap album, it’s hard to see a common meeting ground as Andre drifts further away. Still looking forward to that ‘Kast album though. Hopefully the high remains and we won’t have to Detox.
